Pure ISO 9000.1 and how it can be applied to IM

If you’ve been following my other blog you’ll know I practice something called shooting 50m targets. It’s more an idea than a shooting range.  Basically, you take care of your project/goal/endeavor to such an extent, that the only logical next step for it, is for it to manifest.

I’ve always wanted to work very few hours for a lot of money and travel the world…  No, this isn’t about Internet Marketing at all.  I provide a service to executive level personnel within the government and travel the world to make people say yes and sign documents related to IT Acquisition and Systems Integration.  I spend a few hours of “not really work-work” each week dedicating myself to the preparation of that one hour of work, but my time is more and more involved with IM these days… if IM was a drug, it would definitely be crack.

So, I’m devoting less time to this pursuit of non-IM streams of revenue, but since making that decision the number of “opportunities” to travel and work one hour has exploded.  I’m booked solid through December.  Yeah, that’s right- one hour. Of “work”.  It’ll be a lot of strenuous one hour days…

In Tobyhanna it took a little longer due to the VIP tour of the place.  I’m not going to be specific.  If you don’t know what’s in Tobyhanna and can’t deduce it from what I’m writing, then it’s probably better if you don’t know.

And yes… One hour of “work”.  I was even wearing jeans.  I toured a manufacturing/engineering/repair facility with a 5,000 employee roster.  They had ISO 9000.1  down to a science.  Let’s just say David Allen’s GTD “borrowed” a lot of concepts from it.  Consider this: Before obtaining their ISO cert., the potential  max. of achievable manhours for this facility was 200,000 manhours/week, (mhp/w).  They never reached it as the percentage of personnel calling in sick, on vacation, on comp time or overtime, etc., ran from 3% – 8% depending on season, and, interestingly enough, NFL, NBA, and NHL seasons.  194k-184k was the average range of expected mhp/w, and product completion for various projects ran at average: 9-12% over deadlines by 9 – 23 days.

After ISO 9000.1, and with powerful modeling processes set into place, the effectivity and productivity of the baseline mhp/w began steadily growing.

How does this deal with IM? Yeah, good question- glad you asked…  ISO 9000.1 is really about how to utilize the resources you already have to increase productivity.  Sounds like GTD huh?  The new IM’er doesnt really have many resources to work with.  So, what’s the lesson?  Look harder.

There are a multitude of automation tools to assist the new IM’er.  Things like onlywire.com, socialoomph.com, $1/month (first month only) subscriptions to myarticlenetwork.com and articlemarketingautomation.com, and the 1000′s of article and video submission sites to create backlinks.

With a few social bookmarking personas and a proxy server, the savvy IM’er can generate 100′s of backlinks to his/her money page, landing page, or feeder page.

So, sit there and complain that the “guru’s” have the markets cornered, or be audacious and start busting your ass.  When you start showing profits you can reanalyze your work break down structure, and look at outsourcing and micro-outsourcing as viable tools to complement your campaigns.

Get to it!  I know you can!
